Hungary is one of the best destinations in all of Europe for a city break. It is easily accessible, extremely cheap compared to the UK and has a variety of fascinating sights to explore and discover. By far and away the most popular destination in the country is the capital of Budapest. It has two distinctive sides - Buda and Pest - lying either side of the River Danube, a river that flows through a staggering 10 countries which are unmatched anywhere else in the world.

City Breaks to Hungary

In terms of climate, you can expect a similar one to most of Central Europe – warm summers and cold, snowy winters with moderate temperatures in between. This means that no matter what time of year you fancy going, you can expect a very different experience than if you were to go any other time. Of course, we would highly recommend visiting this beautiful country at all times of the year to truly bask in all of its glory.

Budapest is the number one destination to visit in the country and is no doubt up there with some of the other great cities around Europe. Due to its complex past, you will find all sorts of buildings designed during various eras by different occupants of the city ranging from Roman ruins to neo-gothic buildings to more renaissance-styled ones. Most notably the grand parliament building and Buda Castle are incredible sights that you have to put on your to-do list. You will also find incredible views over both Buda and Pest if you take a short hike up Buda Hill.

The capital of Hungary isn’t just restricted to sight-seeing either, there are plenty of amazing experiences to be had. One of those is a visit to Margaret Island which is a park that sits right in the middle of the River Danube! The city is also known as the ‘City of Spas’ due to its high number of ancient thermal baths that were first introduced all the way back in Roman times. We would highly recommend the Széchenyi baths which feature both indoor and outdoor medicinal baths that are open all year round – even in the freezing winter!
