Although the historic centre of Milan is fairly compact, if you wish to make to most of your short time in the city, an organised tour is recommended. You will be shown the major attractions and can then decide what you would like to explore in greater detail. The magnificent Milan Cathedral dominates the centre. Building began in 1386 and it took almost six hundred years to complete. It is a splendid example of gothic architecture. Make the journey to the roof of the church for panoramic views of the city. The other much visited church is the Santa Maria delle Grazie which holds works by Leonardo da Vinci including the famous Last Supper. Tickets need to be purchased in advance otherwise you have little chance of viewing the painting. Castello Sforzesco is also another impressive building dating from the fifteenth century. It is now a museum. Even if you have no interest in opera, the famous La Scala, built in 1778, has guided tours during the day and is well worth a visit. If you should tire of churches and museums, wander into the parks and gardens dotted around the city. Sempione Park is very pretty and Montanelli Gardens has a natural history museum and a planetarium within its grounds. Shoppers may well be overwhelmed by the price of goods in the designer shops and window shopping may be the advised. Try and vist the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, a glass roofed shopping arcade dating from 1867. The tiled interior is very impressive.
