Holiday Prices Fall Yet Again in September

Each month, Cheeky Trip compares millions of holiday prices for the month against holiday prices in the same period last year. This analysis once again found that holiday prices fell year-on-year in September (by -4%). In 2024, eight months out of nine have experienced holiday prices falling year-on-year (prices rose slightly in March). The following table highlights the price differences for the year to the end of September.

However, despite the falling price trend this year, holiday prices remain significantly higher than they were during the COVID pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

September experienced price decreases for both short-haul (-4%) and medium medium/long-haul holidays (-6%).

Following a YOY price increase in both July and August, holidays to Egypt continued to bounce back in September (increasing by +7%). However, the biggest YOY price rises could be seen with holidays to Portugal (+8% in September vs +16% in August) and holidays to Cape Verde (+14% in both August and September). The biggest YOY price falls were seen among deals to Mainland Spain (-16%) and Bulgaria (-15%).

Last-minute holidays provided opportunities for bargain hunters in September, with deals departing in the next week -6.5% cheaper, and deals departing in a month around -6% cheaper than last year. In contrast, holidays departing in six months increased a little in price (+3%). This is noticeably less than the significant increase seen in August (+10%) for holidays 6 months out.

“Our data indicates that despite price falls throughout the year, suppliers are perhaps holding prices for early 2025 departures in anticipation of strong demand,” says Steve Campion, Managing Director at Cheeky Trip. “Time will tell. It will be interesting to see how this pans out as we head into peak booking season after Christmas. ” continues Steve.
