The Three Peaks Challenge is perhaps the most famous ‘hiking challenge’ in the UK. It consists of climbing the three highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales one after the other. The respective three peaks in each of the countries are Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. The peaks combine to consist of around 26 miles of walking and 3000m of ascent. Hikers usually take on the challenge from north to south or south to north over a series of days (but sometimes all in one day!). It is usually traversed between May - October when the weather is usually much more climb-friendly.

Where are the 3 Peaks?

As already mentioned, the three peaks are Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales. As you might imagine, they are all quite remote. But where are they all exactly?

Ben Nevis is located in the Scottish Highlands and is the tallest out of the three. The town of Fort William is located at the foot of Ben Nevis and is where most hikers stay when completing the peak challenge. It is a small town of around 10,000 people and has all of the small-town facilities that one might expect, including some truly picturesque accommodation choices.

Scafell Pike is located in the Lake District National Park, part of the Southern Fells and Scafell massif. There are many small towns dotted all over the Lake District that can provide a great stay or visit nearby. Keswick is probably the most appropriate, with plenty of shops, cafes, B&Bs and outdoor activity shops. It is located approximately 8 miles from the foot of Scafell Pike. However, there are also other smaller villages that provide beautiful stays nearby.

Snowdon is located in Snowdonia National Park in the county of Gwynedd, Wales. There are plenty of small towns and villages to stay at throughout Snowdonia National Park. Harlech, Beddgelert and Barmouth are just a few worth mentioning. They are all just a short distance from Snowdon itself.
