Las Palmas is the Canary Islands’ largest and most populous city, with just under 400,000 inhabitants. It is a far-cry from much of the smaller resorts that Gran Canaria is famous for, with a metropolitan, mainland Spain feel to it. Due to its size and stature, there are a load of things to get involved with here including museums, shopping streets, beautiful beaches, a grand cathedral and much, much more!

Holidays in Las Palmas

Las Palmas is an extremely popular resort in Gran Canaria and it can be reached at a very low-cost. The region can be reached from most airports in the UK and direct flights to Las Palmas’ very own airport are largely available. Make sure you check the Cheekytrip comparison site to see flights from your local airport. Direct flights to Gran Canaria tend to be just under 4 hours.

Las Palmas is at its most lively during the summer period that runs from Spring until Autumn but due to its sheer size, it is pretty busy all year round. Temperatures tend to reach the low 30s throughout these summer months. A trip during peak season might be ideal if you want to experience the full vibrancy of the city whereas a trip during the off-season might be the ideal time to visit if you want to explore Las Palmas in more comfortable temperatures.

There are an abundance of things to see and do in Las Palmas and one of the most popular tourist attractions is Triana, the commercial zone of the city. An incredible variety of restaurants, cafes and shops line the streets and many visitors spend full days in this area. The town has a number of galleries and museums that are worth visiting including ‘Museo Canarios’ which focuses on the island’s history before the conquest and ‘Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno’ which houses some of the finest artwork in the land. If it gets too hot and you want a trip to the beach, the northern part of the city provides a 3km-long beach. Some parts are a big hit with surfers due to the ferocity of the waves whereas further north you will find calmer waters for swimming.

As one might expect, Las Palmas has the largest selection of accommodation choices on the island. Anything from all inclusive swanky hotels to luscious self-catered villas to quiet apartments that are a part of the expansive AirBnb network are available. The cuisine in and around the city is equally impressive, with many smaller restaurants and cafes retaining their traditional Spanish roots and menus and plenty of others specialising in international favourites from all corners of the world!
