York is an historic city lying in the Vale of York in the north of England. Bordered by the Pennines and the North York Moors and York Wolds, the city lies on the River Ouse at the point where it is joined by the Foss. York has history dating from Roman times and some of the city walls have survived from that time.

The vast majority of the walls that surround the medieval city were constructed between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. The walls have four gatehouses one of which, Monk Bar, has a working portcullis and houses a museum to Richard the third. Walmgate Bar has a barbican and portcullis.

York Minister dominates the skyline and is one of the largest gothic cathedrals in Europe. The west window, completed in 1408 has the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. For great views over the city, climb the  two hundred and fifty steps into the central tower. The most famous street in the city is The Shambles with its overhanging, timber framed buildings. The name derives from 'fleshammels', the shelves where butchers displayed their meat. Until the 1870s, there were twenty-five butchers in the street, but now none remain.
 

York has several great museums.

York has several great museums including the Railway Museum, York Castle Museum, the Jorvic Viking Centre and the York City Gallery. Other attractions include the York Dungeon, York's Chocolate Story and York boat tours. York is a very pleasant city, an ideal choice for a short break.
